Stokely Carmichael (later Kwame Ture) was a pivotal Civil Rights leader who popularized the "Black Power" slogan in 1966. He influenced the Black Panther Party by encouraging a shift toward Black nationalism and separatism, serving as honorary Prime Minister from 1968–1969. He championed the Black Panther as a symbol of strength, initially for the Lowndes County Freedom Organization in Alabama. Carmichael popularized the black panther as a symbol of strength and dignity, stating, "an animal that never strikes back until he's back so far... he's got nothing to do but spring". He became the honorary Prime Minister of the Oakland Black Panther Party in 1968. He moved away from the non-violent methods of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) to embrace Black power and self-defense.
